Isolation Party!

Reuben Lorch-Miller lived in Olympia, Washington for nine years beginning in 1989. During that time he attended The Evergreen State College (TESC) and enrolled in a beginning photography class, not because he was particularly interested in photography but it somehow fulfilled a "math" requirement he needed to move on to other goals. His instructor, Bob Haft, was "a street photography guy...with Bob it was traditional B&W." Reuben started to see the world around him, paying attention to design, both the intentional and haphazard. He worked at the TESC darkroom and was asked by one of his work mates, Sara Lund, to photograph her band Unwound for their next album.

From there he photographed more artists, bands, music-makers. He toured with KARP twice and they named a song named after him. He moved to San Francisco then to Brooklyn, where he has lived for over a decade. A friend who was starting a small publishing concern asked him about his Olympia photographs, he hadn't really thought about them or even looked at them for quite some time. It had been 20 years and he wondered if this body of work stood on its own, would have value to anyone not involved. He was pleasantly surprised to discover they spoke volumes about "an amazing and creative village."

Reuben's photogs from the early '90s have been collected in a book called Isolation Party (the title is derived from a KARP lyric), available now from The K Mail Order Dept. "It was only three years but a lot happened to me and the people in the book. I have a certain excitement and certain respect for the trust people gave me. These images became recognizable to people, people all over know these photographs."

Reuben Lorch-Miller has shared his view of this time and place in Isolation Party, a magical tome in black and white.
