When You Fall and Say Something, Say Anything explore the feeling of holding an empty hand out to someone you love. Karl Blau (of Karl Blau, Laura Veirs, and Earth), Brian Wright (of Graves\/Gold Leaves), Cory Gray (Carcrashlander), Nate Ashley, Jess Madris, Johnny Zeigler (of Strength), Matthew Johnson (of Natural Bridges) and Lindsay’s sisters Steph and April Schief (of The Mona Reels) all lent a hand. It is a departure duet. Acoustic guitar, trap kit, and organ orchestrate the end of this short songwriting partnership. Lindsay sings, “I left a boxspring and couple of chairs” and it’s true. One of the chairs went missing afterwards as you can read about in the liner notes. Greg sings his reply, “Come visit me whenever you can” and the chorus is so much what we wish it could be like when it ends. You gotta listen to the thump thump thump.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Poor Aim” has Lindsay singing to the object of her affection, in the building above, as she coos about her plight – sliding about on the roof of a pick-up truck in the rain tossing change at the window of her beloved. They tore down the façade, said the words that I didn’t yet have. \u003ci\u003eHalo,\u003c\/i\u003e a CD release on Spartadisc forever consigned to disappear in the 7” section due to its oversized origami sleeve, culled tracks from their three previous cassettes, and this public-service reissue ropes in the majority (20 tracks) from that release. There are more mixtape staples on here than you’d think possible, a homespun collection of stripped-down, genderqueer love anthems and ballads, laden with youthful sincerity and dripping with hormonal lust that squelches through the confusion. In 2018 the explicit tone of some of these songs, both in the way they dug into those melodies, and in the stance carried by these compassionate libertines, leaps out. The kind of words and sentiments expressed herein feel far more loaded in a world where lines of consent are on the verge of being redrawn, and the innocence they once carried in a world where we weren’t all that personal with one another on the scale that we are now very nearly makes some of this music dangerous on its own terms, and incalculable in the way that cell phones could circumvent the bulk of mystery narratives authored before 1990. It's more like the edge of nowhere. The outer edge. Kelowna is the town that spawned \u003cstrong\u003eGrapes of Wrath\u003c\/strong\u003e, comprised of brothers Chris and Tom Hooper and pal Kevin Kane. They started playing together as twelve and fourteen year olds in the punk trio \u003cstrong\u003eKill Pigs\u003c\/strong\u003e before going their separate ways in a series of punk (\u003cstrong\u003eGentlemen of Horror\u003c\/strong\u003e!) and new wave (\u003cstrong\u003eEmpty Set\u003c\/strong\u003e!) bands, recombining the magic three in April 1983. Things happened fast for a band from the edge of nowhere - by December they were playing Seattle and Vancouver with savant rockers \u003cstrong\u003e54-40\u003c\/strong\u003e and recording for the newly minted Nettwerk label (\u003cstrong\u003eMoev\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eSkinny Puppy\u003c\/strong\u003e). \u003cstrong\u003eGrapes of Wrath\u003c\/strong\u003e went on to record several albums (for Nettwerk and Capitol) and tour the world. They left Kelowna as soon as they could but it never left them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e As a member of a trio from the other side of nowhere, Olympia, Washington, who also started playing in early 1983 I can relate to their musical journey and their mix of influences: punk art monster damage new wave '60s sounds. Though I was vaguely aware of \u003cstrong\u003eGrapes of Wrath\u003c\/strong\u003e our paths never crossed. I kept in touch with them on the Astral Plane and finally connected via telephone hotline last week with Kevin Kane about broken amplifiers, \u003cstrong\u003eNick Drake\u003c\/strong\u003e and the height of their musical career, recording several sessions for CBC \u003cem\u003eBrave New Waves\u003c\/em\u003e with producer Kevin Komoda, which are now available as an album on Artoffact Records.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Kevin had a lot of wonderful anecdotes, I'll telegraph a few of them here: One of the early \u003cstrong\u003eGrapes of Wrath\u003c\/strong\u003e shows in Vancouver was at a high school promoted by eleventh grader John Ruskin (Aka \u003cstrong\u003eNardwuar the Human Serviette\u003c\/strong\u003e). In attendance was underclassman Grant Lawrence who decided “this rock music stuff looks fun” and soon formed his own combo, \u003cstrong\u003eThe Smugglers\u003c\/strong\u003e. A weekend of shows in Olympia and Seattle August 1984 were cancelled when the proprietor of Graven Image (Seattle art gallery) got offered \u003cstrong\u003eJodie Fosters Army\u003c\/strong\u003e the same night and to him the choice was obvious -bye bye \u003cstrong\u003eGrapes of Wrath\u003c\/strong\u003e. A representative of Capitol Records was in Vancouver to check into a diff band when a local music journalist recommended he detour three doors down the street and see \u003cstrong\u003eGrapes of Wrath\u003c\/strong\u003e. He was immediately charmed but had to swing a distribution deal with Nettwerk to gain access to the band. Their first low-budget video was produced about the same time Canada's Much Music (similar to our MTV) started broadcasting; spurred by Canadian Content laws and the fact that \u003cstrong\u003eGrapes of Wrath\u003c\/strong\u003e were young and cute, they received a lot of play on Much Music, launching them to national prominence. The band loved Calif.
