New Dub Narcotic Disco Plates from Kendl Winter, Bobby Birdman!
The first floor of our building K is dedicated to the Dub Narcotic Studio, birthplace of epic recordings by LAKE, The Curious Mystery, Angelo Spencer, Chain & the Gang and so many others. It is also the residence of our Selector Dub Narcotic who has collated a series of 7” 45 rpm releases known as Dub Narcotic Disco Plates. The concept is simple: a band records one song for the A side of the single, then Selector Dub Narcotic remixes that song for the flip. Already been and gone are 45s by City Center [DBN117], Christmas [DBN118], Chain & the Gang [DBN119], Joey Casio [DBN115] and Atlas Sound [DBN113]. The latest additions feature Kendl Winter [DBN121] and Bobby Birdman [DBN124]. The Kendl Winter song is “At the Same Time” is a fully reversible summer/winter jamz bruhaha that grooves lush and glowing. The Bobby Birdman song “Don’t Walk Away” infekts all who hear it with foot-on-dance-floor disease. Flip either disc over and you spin some melony melodica sweetness that is ripe, so ripe. Of course, these are also available from the K Mail Order Dept. as digital downloadables. Next up on the Dub Narcotic Disco Plate calendar are 45s by LAKE, Mount Eerie and Arringotn de Dionyso’s Malaikat dan Singa.
Nucular Aminals: the REAL Story!
A lot of folks have seen the Nucular Aminals album listed on the K new release schedule and wondered “What the wtf? Who dat? And why?”. Fair questions. Here’s the way it all went down: Robert Comitz (known for playing in Olympia bands Hornet Leg and November Witch) and Erin Schmith (the two played together in the San Francisco duo Marriage + Cancer) moved to the Pacific Northwest with fellow musician Jheremy Grigsby. In Portland they joined forces with drummer Wiley Hickson (Total Bros. ) and Nucular Aminals haven’t looked back since. Underneath Robert’s soothing delivery and flavorful guitar musings, the Aminals collective expertise reveals itself: Jheremy‘s bass stylings are the propulsive pace that holds the entire rhythmic canvas together like warm glue (I know, that sounds gross), Wiley plays the traps with youthful swing and sway, and Erin‘s fanciful fingerstrokes on the farfisa cuddle and purr.
This is all combined to great effect on their new K album Nucular Aminals [KLP233], available as a digital downloadable, LP or CD. Noisy pop rockin’, people. The rabbit is having a meltdown! Woo Hoooo!
Helsing Junction Rises Again!
The Chehalis River Basin is the largest in Washington State, covering Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason and Thurston Counties. In the winter it is a terror, rising above it’s banks to flood farm and freeway front porch. In the summer it’s banks in rural southern Thurston County host the annual Helsing Junction Sleep Over. It’s a camp out, a jamboree, and star-spangled musical festivity featuring independently produced films, rock’n’roll and food! It happens on a bale of hay at the Helsing Junction Farm, an organic endeavor that provides a box of delicious vegetables to their over 500 CSA subscribers each week. On August 19-21 it becomes a mini-Yasgur’s Farm of a venue for the many musical merry-making types that hang around K, Bicycle, Lasercave and Independence Valley. This year will feature performances by Pine Hill Haints, Joey Casio, City Center, LAKE, Kendl Winter, Kimya Dawson, Generifus, Angelo Spencer et les Hauts Sommets, Arrington de Dionyso’s Malaikat dan Singa and so many more! You can purchase an advance pass to attend the entire weekend: camp in the orchard, swim in the river (at your own risk! But we all do…), for a measly $30.00. Individual events admission is also available. See you there!
