Recently unearthed from the archives in the farthest reaches of the Dub Narcotic Studio is early footage of Girl Trouble recording at Yo-Yo Studio with Calvin Johnson and Patrick Maley. At the time Yo-Yo Studio was in it’s original location, the chicken coop and barn of a (no longer existent) farm house on 14th Ave. NW outside of Olympia, Washington. These summer, 1986 recordings were to comprise the first Girl Trouble single, one of the initial volumes in the K series of 7″ 45 rpm phonograph records known as the International Pop Underground. However, the recordings made at this session were never released! These images were filmed by Calvin Johnson using a regular 8mm movie camera and are now available for viewing at the Pink Elephant’s Graveyard.
The singles that did get released, “Riverbed” / “She no Rattle My Cage” [IPU003] and “Old Time Religion” / “Tarantula” [IPU006] were recorded by Tim Olsen (with auxiliary engineer Calvin Johnson), who later recorded the debut Girl Trouble album Hit It or Quit It [KLP229]. Unavailable for decades, Hit It or Quit It was re-issued by K in January, 2014 and is available once again from the K Mail Order Dept.
