K Staff Playlist: The Kind of Music You Listen To – by River Nason

Sunday, June 16th, 2013

You ever get asked what kind of music you listen to by someone you don’t know very well? That’s gotta be one of the most frustrating questions in the world to have to answer on the spot, especially when “well, just about everything” is at once the most accurate answer to give and the least satisfying answer to hear. If you asked me what kind of music is on this playlist, I wouldn’t know what to tell you. These songs are insidious earworms. There’s the soothing psychedelic soundscape of Landing‘s “Filament,” from their excellent downtempo album Sphere [KLP162]. There’s Dub Narcotic Sound System‘s funky party anthem “Hand Clappin,” complete with slinky bass line and nineties hip-hop groove. But wait, there’s more! Basemint‘s dynamic “No Retro,” from the International Pop Underground release of the same name, is the surf rock’n'roll of the future, and ”Christmas Island,” from LAKE‘s Let’s Build A Roof [KLP213], is a brilliantly catchy song that you might recognize from the closing credits of Adventure Time!

So this is what you should do. Listen to these tracks once, or twice, or several times, and then when you’re shopping for cabbage rolls and reconstituted cat sauce at Ralph’s a week and a half from now and you just can’t place those twelve melodies stuck in your head, come back and listen to this playlist again. See?
