K Staff Playlist: “The K Horn Sound” by Sam Gray

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Sam Gray: “I’ve got a soft spot for horns since basically all I listened to for the first 18 years of my life was the jazz music (and a little Pink Floyd). The horns onK releases tend to have a pretty cool sound. Like no one really knows for sure how to play their instruments but they’re real excited about it. It reminds me of the one of my favorite bands “The Band,” at least the first few albums. Kind of a wobbly out-of-tune moaning and wailing. Then of course there’s Arrington‘s shrieking. That’ll wake you up in the morning.

“So yeah, Adrian Orange‘s album is heavily represented. I love that album, every track is gold, go check it out. Microphones, and Mirah both use horn dubs to great effect; Karl Blau puts his saxophone front and center on this track off Max . LAKE does their horn sound a bit tighter, sounds kind of like the Motown stuff but subdued. Arrington rocks out in the middle of an Old Time Relijun track, and I think that’s him with Chain & the Gang too.”
