Dub Narcotic Disco Plates: New Slates!
November/December/January has seen a bumper-to-bumper crop of Dub Narcotic Disco Plate beat drops. White Rainbow, the Hive Dwellers, LAKE, Bobby Birdman and Mount Eerie all have new songs in the series recorded at the Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, each with a remix by Selector Dub Narcotic featuring his ruggedly handsome melodica playing. Remember, Dub Narcotic Disco Plates (our series of 7″ 45 rpm phonograph records) aren’t just designed for back-patio dance parties with the swingin’ close-and-play: they also slide easily into your personal MP3 players ’cause you know the K Mail Order Dept. has them available as digital downloadables.
Mount Eerie as you know is Phil W. Elverum, former Olympia resident and resident genius at Unknown in Anacortes, Wash. The Mount Eerie 45 “Distorted Cymbals” [DBN122] hits the street next Tuesday! How it happened is he lay down some heavy riff “Distorted Cymbals” magic in Olympia which Selector Dub Narcotic sprinkled with salt and transformed into “Anglepoise Cymbals” on the flipside.
White Rainbow has weird-outs rejoicing because “The Making of Thriller” [DBN125] is keeping their dance cards filled. Secretly a compatriot of Phil W. Elverum (otherwise known as Adam Forkner), together they have tied many knots on the docks of the Dub Narcotic Studio and elsewhere, battening down the hatches and setting sail with the likes of Little Wings, Calvin Johnson, Mirah, VVRSSNN and we dunt remember who else, fudge it. The point is that as White Rainbow shows, one can wear many musical hats all to the same cotillion. For another view check into Selector Dub Narcotic‘s “The Making of Star Wars”. Huffing it.
LAKE have spent a lot of time at the Dub Narcotic Studio, both their most recent albums Giving & Receiving [KLP228] and Let’s Build a Roof [KLP213] were recorded there. A song from Let’s Build a Roof [KLP213], “Gravel”, caught Selector Dub Narcotic‘s ear and the band scheduled a session to record it as a Dub Narcotic Disco Plate. This resulted in not only a groove oriented version of the song “Gravel” [KLP116] but a Selector Dub Narcotic take on the matter, “Regrade”. It’s a session on the rise, shining like the moon harvest.
The Hive Dwellers also entered the Dub Narcotic Studio with the goal of retooling one of their basement standbys as a Dub Narcotic Disco Plate anthem. Voila!, “Lynch the Swan” [DBN126] is a slammer, paper-jammer, full on ring toss suburb-blaster. Guest players include Andrew Dorsett (LAKE) and Karl Blau. Heavy blues turned stone-skip lighter than air. Selector Dub Narcotic makes it even better via “Dub the Swan”. You dig?
Bobby Birdman (aka Rob Kieswetter) made a pit stop in Olympia accompanied by pals Jeffrey Jerusalem and E*Rock to lay down his pumped grooveXgroan “Don’t Walk Away” [DBN124]. It’s a catchy pop song that doubles as dance floor filler-up. Rob croons, he plays the bass, he makes you feel good to be alive. On the other side Selector Dub Narcotic piles it on with “Dub Walk”.
