K Staff PlaylistDown in the Basement
[Mail Order Maven Joel has asked members of the K staff to create Staff Playlists for the K Mail Order Dept. What follows is a list of recordings made in the original Dub Narcotic Studio (located in an Olympia residential basement) during the years 1993 to 1997 compiled by Calvin Johnson. His K Staff Playlist is available as individual digital downloadables or as a full album download.]

Good times in the cold, dark. Plastique, neighborhood kids (Ski Lodge) who ignite amplifiers and drums for full sonic tilth. Some Velvet Sidewalk: always ready to be documented, their lacerating oscillations difficult to harness. Miranda July made several trips down the concrete stairs in her white lab coat (long before it became de rigueur for us to don same) for ascetic sound speculation and substantiation. Dub Narcotic Sound System bled disco strontium 90. Mecca Normal make me cry. Black Anger found haven for their T-Town soliloquies in our subterranean saltbox. The Softies melt the surf wax and strip the heart. Fitz of Depression dug deep and heavy with Jack Endino at the controls. Make-Up‘s expansive sound required a living room sans furniture. KG was Tae Won Yu (Kicking Giant) with Dub Narcotic Sound System rhythm section Todd and Larry soul savior delight (see their Dub Narcotic Disco Plate for more groove-time). Versus took on the Teen Beat tip and laid a forest fire, smouldering over all. Nikki McClure often sang from the back porch. D+ slept in the dining room and made rich, dark coffee. Wandering Lucy bent guitar tones to her will. The Halo Benders invent Basement Punk.
