Nucular Aminals - Bob FlanaganWARNING: Do not let their intentionally misspelled band name and large, welcoming spectacles deceive you: Nucular Aminals are a serious band and you need to pay undivided attention to their sound.
This breed of Aminals was formed in Portland, Oregon by four distinctly rare species of musician who specialize in perfect pop melancholy. In 2007, Robert Comitz (Hornet Leg, November Witch) and Erin Schmith (who played together in the San Francisco duo Marriage + Cancer) moved to the Pacific Northwest, with fellow musician Jheremy Grigsby. In Portland they joined forces with ace drummer Wiley Hickson (Total Bros.) and they haven’t looked back since.
On repeated listens one might hear the morose echoes of Magnetic Fields, the most tasteful moments of the best Nirvana tracks, the jazzy entanglement of The Doors, Daniel Johnstons’ cerebral lyricism, and most certainly Os Mutantes’ insistent sonic playfulness. Underneath Robert’s soothing nasal delivery and flavorful guitar musings, the Aminals collective expertise reveals itself: Jheremy’s bass stylings are the propulsive pace that holds the entire rhythmic canvas together like warm glue, Wiley plays the traps with youthful swing and sway, and Erin’s fanciful fingerstrokes on the farfisa cuddle and purr. Stitched together these virtuosos create an inhale, exhale that lets the audience breathe easily: zen is attained.
Nucular Aminals tour and perform quite often, playing with respectable groups like Harlem, Grass Widow, The Intelligence, Christmas and Nodzzz. They have a self-titled debut album for K [KLP233] that was released in June 2011. A follow-up 7″, “Nobody’s Man” b/w “Kill Your Dogs” and “Garrison + Phillips/Garrison Phillips” (IPU137), was released in September 2011. Seeing them live is a must and if you are lucky (and you will be) they will even serenade you in Portuguese!
